Northern Lights Set to Illuminate UK Skies Overnight
Supercharged Solar Storms Trigger Aurora Borealis Displays
Visible across large parts of the country, including the south
The Northern Lights are expected to be visible across large parts of the UK overnight, as a supercharged solar storm has triggered aurora borealis displays. The UK's Met Office has issued its first severe solar storm warning since 2005, with the storm supercharging the Northern Lights and making them visible in Scotland, Wales, and England, including parts of the south where they are rarely seen.
The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, appear as bright swirling curtains of lights in the night sky and range in colour from green to pink. The displays are caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with the Earth's atmosphere. The stronger the solar storm, the more intense the aurora display.
AuroraWatch UK, a free service offering alerts of when the Northern Lights are likely to be visible, has issued an alert for tonight. The service predicts that the aurora will be visible from around 9:38pm onwards.
